Homemade 7 Up Biscuits

Everyone loves a good biscuit! There are just so many ways to eat them and let’s face it, that buttery flavor is irresistible. It’s tempting to make them using pre-made refrigerated biscuit dough, but what if I told you that it was super easy to make biscuits with Bisquick and 7 Up? Did I blow your mind?

These biscuits actually bake in butter, so the result is an amazing buttery outside and a light, fluffy inside. I know it might sound strange to use 7 Up in a biscuit recipe, but trust me – you have to try this.

The Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make the 7 Up Biscuits Recipe (the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the printable recipe card):

  • Bisquick – you can use a generic baking mix instead
  • 7 Up – Sprite also works very well
  • Sour Cream
  • Butter

How to Make 7 Up Biscuits

Make the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking mix, sour cream, and 7 Up.

Turn the dough out onto a counter sprinkled with baking mix.

Shape the biscuits. Gently press the dough down to about 1/2-inch in thickness, then cut out biscuits. You can use a round biscuit cutter like down below, or just cut the dough into 9 square biscuits. Either way works fine.

Combine the butter and biscuit dough in a baking dish. Pour melted butter into a 9×9-inch baking pan, reserving some of the butter to brush on top of the biscuits. Place the biscuits into the pan on top of the butter.

Bake. Brush the tops of the biscuits with the reserved melted butter. Bake at 450ºF for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Cool the biscuits for a few minutes in the pan. Then remove from the pan and serve warm.

Tips for Success

  • Don’t skip the butter. You may be tempted to skip the butter or reduce the amount used. Don’t do it! These biscuits need the fat from the butter to cook up fluffy and flavorful.
  • Can I use another kind of soda? I have tried Sprite and that worked really well too.
  • Can I use self rising flour or regular flour instead of Bisquick? They aren’t the same thing so unfortunately, no. There are recipes out there for homemade bisquick, but since that it basically a combination of flour, salt and leavening agent you might as well make regular biscuits at that point!

What Goes with these Biscuits?

There are so many ways to enjoy 7 Up Biscuits the real question is, where to start?

Add some toppings: The simplest way to enjoy these is warm with a pat of melty butter or a generous scoop of your favorite jam. I’m also a big fan of adding some honey to these and enjoying them for breakfast.

Chili: These biscuits also go wonderfully as a side dish for Chili Mac and Cheese, Chili Lime Chicken Soup, or Three Bean Chili.

Soup: If I had to pick my top two suggestions, it would be this Taco Soup or this Hamburger Soup. This Instant Pot Broccoli Cheese soup is also seriously good with some biscuits on the side.

For breakfast: Why not serve these with a side of scrambled eggs and some crispy bacon or sizzling sausage? My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

How to Store and Reheat Extras

Keep any leftover biscuits in an airtight container or zip-top bag. The biscuits can either be refrigerated for up to three days, or kept at room temperature for 2-3 days.

You can eat them at room temperature, but if you want to warm them up I find that a toaster oven set to “reheat” or a few minutes in an oven preheated to 350F warms them up perfectly.
