Disenchanted: Everything you need to know (2024)

Disenchanted is only a month away after a long, long wait for Enchanted fans, so now all we can do is wait.

The first trailer was unveiled at the D23 Expo in September 2022 ahead of the sequel's release on Disney+. While it didn't tease any of the songs, we did get a major twist: Giselle could become the evil stepmother!

"When Giselle makes the wish that the world could be a fairy tale, she still thinks she's a younger lady, I guess, because she's the ingenue. And she's not anymore. She's now the stepmother and things begin to unfold in that direction," Amy Adams teased to EW.

We'll have to wait and see how that pans out when Disenchanted is released on Disney+ this month. And while we wait, here's everything you need to know about Disenchanted, aka Enchanted 2.

Disenchanted release date: When will Enchanted 2 be released?

Disenchanted was set to be released on Disney+ on Thanksgiving, so that's November 24. However, its release was brought forward a week to Friday, November 18 at 8am UK time (midnight PT, 3am ET in the US).

The sequel was filmed from May-July 2021 in Ireland, before some reshoots took place in March and April 2022. Now that the release date has been confirmed and the trailer released, we'd hope that November date is sticking.

Otherwise, we'll definitely be the ones who are disenchanted. For now, you can rewatch Enchanted on Disney+.

Disenchanted trailer: Watch the Enchanted 2 trailer here!

As mentioned above, the first trailer for Disenchanted was released in September 2022 to give us our best look yet at the sequel.

Everything seems well at the start as Giselle and Robert move to the suburb of Monroeville to continue their happily ever after. Giselle quickly comes to realise that's harder than they thought, and one decision leads to her potentially turning evil.

Disenchanted cast: Who's coming back for Enchanted 2?

As expected, Amy Adams is back as Giselle in the sequel, but we shouldn't be too surprised about that.

Back in 2016, when director Adam Shankman first signed on, Amy Adams said that she's "not going to let anyone else play Giselle" and confirmed in 2018 that she's still "absolutely up for that" if the sequel goes ahead.

She's not the only original star returning as she'll be joined by Patrick Dempsey as Robert, James Marsden as Prince Edward and Idina Menzel as Nancy.

Thanks to the reshoots, we got our first look at Adams and Dempsey back as Giselle and Robert, so you can enjoy those again below if you missed out the first time around.

Gabriella Baldacchino will be playing Robert's now-grown-up daughter Morgan, while other newcomers include Maya Rudolph as Giselle's new enemy Malvina, Kolton Stewart as Malvina's son, Yvette Nicole Brown as Rosalyn, Jayma Mays as Ruby and Oscar Nunez as Edgar.

The trailer gave us some clues about Rudolph's villain, who seems to be the main person around Monroeville and clashes with Giselle when she moves into the suburb. In May 2021, Rudolph revealed she might not have always taken the role.

"If this had been 15 years ago and someone asked if I wanted to be the bad guy, I might've been like, 'Geez, I don't know'," she said. "But I've come to learn in my many years that the most fun thing to get to do is when you get to play The Most."

Behind the scenes, Hairspray's Adam Shankman is directing the movie, while Enchanted duo Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz are back with new songs for the sequel.

Disenchanted plot: What's Enchanted 2 about?

With the release of the first trailer, we got a new synopsis for Disenchanted:

"It has been 15 years since Giselle and Robert wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city, so they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life," it reads.

"Unfortunately, it isn't the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe, who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever.

"Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn't been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family's future happiness in jeopardy.

"Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family."

In September 2021, Adams teased that the sequel features "a lot more singing and a lot more dancing" which had a particular downside. "The last time I really danced as much as I'm required to dance in this, I was in my 20s, and now I'm not in my 20s," she said.

"It feels different in your 40s. In my heart, I look like I'm in my 20s when I'm dancing, and then I would watch playback and be like, 'Whoa, that's not the same.'"

Talking of singing, Disenchanted will also right a wrong of the first movie and have Menzel sing after she had her number cut out of the first movie. "That was the grossest oversight, her never singing in the first one," Adams told EW.

"She sings twice, and I couldn't be happier. Yes, that's a Wicked reference. But I'm thrilled. Her song is so beautiful. It's one of my favourite moments of the movie. She's Idina – she's special and has such a beautiful voice."

Dempsey will also sing in the movie, marking the first time he's done so.

"I will be singing for the first time. I've never ever sung publicly – for a reason. So bear with me," he said. "I hope the fans embrace it. But they've set me up for success and the lyrics are really fun."

Disenchanted will be released on Disney+ on November 18, while Enchanted is available to watch now.
